Judaism has one main Sacred Text that is referred to. This is called the Torah.

The word Torah has several meanings and refers to:

1. A covenant at Mount Sinai, which is traditionally associated with the five books of Moses.

2. The five books, handwritten on parchment scrolls and read in the synagogue.

3. Rules and Customs that are followed with Jews across the centuries. These Rules and Customs help to shape and mould Jewish life.

4. The Jewish history and the lessons that Jews learn from this history.

The whole of the Torah was supposedly revealed to Moses at Mount Sinai and passed down through the ages. Many Jews believe this story and that the Torah has then been passed from teacher to pupil. Other Jews believe that the Torah is the continuous or gradual revelation of Jewish people and God's will towards them.
