Mythology
In Aboriginal Spirituality, myths are used as sacred stories about the land, it's origins and it's people. These myths are not history, but do include some elements of religious truth. These myths are just as important as the Creed in Catholic Christianity, but rather than being spoken or written down, they are often sung, danced and acted out.
The Dreaming
In Aboriginal Spirituality, the 'Dreaming' are sacred stories, that exist in a timeless world. It's through this 'dreaming' that Aboriginals find their sense of holiness in life. Each individual is born in the dreaming and learn about life through the dreaming rituals. These Dreamings are the foundation for all aspects of Aboriginal life, religion and spirituality.
These Dreaming myths, considered 'living stories', are about the people's ancestor spirits, and the creation period. These stories are set out as to describe the land and it's owners, and the relationship that each individual has with the land. Dreamings tell stories of how ancestral spirits shaped the landforms, the animals and the plants. It tells how the spirits moved through the land shaping rivers, mountains and lakes.
